Emily Watson Howes is a writer, director and performer working in radio, television and theatre. She has written and performed in numerous shows at the Edinburgh Festival, most recently Seminar at the Pleasance and The Baby Diary at Assembly. She was the sole writer for The Umbrella Birds, a four woman sketch comedy group, and wrote and recorded two series of The Ladies, a four part series for Hat Trick and BBC Radio 4.
Emily is also the Artistic Director of You Need Me, an international storytelling company. You Need Me are an Associate Company at the Corn Exchange, Newbury, and have worked with the BAC, Hightide, New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth, and Schtanhaus amongst others. Award nominations include Best Ensemble at the Stage Awards and Best Emerging Company and Best Graduate Company in consecutive years at the Total Theatre Awards. Emily has directed How It Ended and Certain Dark Things for You Need Me at Edinburgh, the Arcola, London, and on tour throughout the UK. Most recently she directed Death Song, commissioned by Corn Exchange, Newbury and Arts Council England, and supported by New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth, which toured the UK in Autumn 2011. You Need Me are currently developing a new piece for 2012.
As a freelance director Emily was shortlisted for the 2011 JMK Award for Young Directors and most recently directed Coasting, a new play by Natalie Mcgrath, for Tom Morris at the Bristol Old Vic.
