Victoria Wood's Big Fat Documentary
Our obsession with weight, obesity and diets are explored in this two-part series by top British comedienne Victoria Wood. This fat-themed programming was the highest rated documentary programme of the week on BBC1 February 2004 with 6.7 million viewers. Victoria presents her take on the diet industry, interviewing various celebrities and looking at the multi-million pound business of diets aids.
Victoria Wood is walking through the Fat lands on both sides of the Atlantic, the UK in the first episode and the US in the second, trying to work out where she stands on press pressure, fat acceptance, slimming products and surgery.
Why is it funny to be fat? Why is it so hard to lose weight? Why are there so many people trying to take our money? Why are slimming clubs in such horrible halls, and why do people turn up for years losing and gaining the same two stone? To successfully lose weight does it help if you're the Chancellor of the Exchequer?
Victoria presents her take on the diet industry, interviewing various celebrities and looking at the multi-million pound diet business; how much of it is a con exploiting the nation's insecurities with weight with little effect. It's a very personal look at a global problem most people can relate to and has now become the hottest TV subject.
